the Gorilla Permit System
A gorilla trekking permit is an official document
from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that allows you to track a habituated
gorilla family for one hour in Bwindi
Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Each permit is valid for a
specific date and sector, with only eight permits available per gorilla family
daily. This strict limit protects the gorillas from disease and stress while
keeping the experience intimate. For a more immersive option, the Gorilla
Habituation Experience costs $1,500 and allows up to four hours with a gorilla
family, available only in Bwindi's Rushaga sector. The standard permit fee of
$800 is the single biggest expense in your trip and funds conservation, ranger
salaries, and community projects.
2. Choose
Between Bwindi and Mgahinga
Uganda has two gorilla trekking parks. Bwindi
Impenetrable National Park is the most popular choice, with over 20
habituated gorilla families spread across four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija,
Rushaga, and Nkuringo. This gives you the widest availability and flexibility.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is smaller, with only one habituated family
(Nyakagezi) and just eight permits per day. Mgahinga offers a more exclusive
and intimate experience against the backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes, and it
is also the only park where you can combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey
tracking. Your choice depends on whether you want more options (Bwindi) or a
quieter, exclusive trek (Mgahinga).
3. Select Your
Specific Trekking Sector in Bwindi
If you choose Bwindi, your permit is tied to a
specific sector, so you must decide which one before booking. Buhoma is the
most established and accessible sector, with a wide range of accommodation and
moderate terrain. Rushaga has the most gorilla families and is the only sector
offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Nkuringo offers the most dramatic
scenery but has the most challenging, strenuous terrain, best for fit trekkers.
Ruhija is the quietest and highest-altitude sector, ideal for birdwatchers
seeking solitude. Arriving at the wrong gate on trekking day means you miss
your experience entirely, so confirm your sector at the time of booking.
4. Choose
Between Standard Trekking and the Habituation Experience
You have two experience options. Standard gorilla
trekking costs $800 per person and gives you one hour with a fully habituated
gorilla family. This is the most common choice and is available in all sectors
of Bwindi
and at Mgahinga. The Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE) costs $1,500 and
is available only in Bwindi's Rushaga sector. With the GHE, only four visitors
spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated family, accompanied by
researchers and rangers who are actively working to get the gorillas used to
humans. This gives you a much deeper look into gorilla behavior and social
structures but requires a higher fitness level and a full day commitment.
5. Book Through
a Licensed Tour Operator
International visitors cannot book gorilla permits
directly with UWA; only Ugandan citizens and foreign residents living in Uganda
can do so. Therefore, you must book through a licensed tour operator registered
with the Uganda Tourism Board. A good operator will check real-time
availability, reserve your permit, handle all payment procedures, and
coordinate your accommodation and transport. They can also advise on the best
sectors, packing essentials, and fitness expectations. While you may pay an
administrative fee of $50–$100 for their service, booking through an operator
is faster, more reliable, and removes the stress of dealing with UWA directly.
6. Confirm
Availability and Make Payment
Once you provide your preferred dates and passport
details to your operator, they check availability through UWA's online system.
If slots are open, the operator reserves your permit temporarily. You must then
pay the full cost of the permit (100%) to secure it. Payment is made via bank
transfer, credit/debit card, or mobile money to UWA's official accounts; cash
is not accepted. Partial payments are not allowed, and the reservation is valid
for only about seven days without payment before it goes back to the market.
You will receive an invoice and, after payment, an official receipt with a
booking ID as confirmation.
7. Receive Your
Permit Confirmation
After your payment clears, UWA issues an official
permit confirmation, which includes your trekking date, assigned sector, and a
receipt number. Your tour operator will collect the permit from UWA
headquarters in Kampala on your behalf and keep it until your trekking day. You
will receive a scanned copy of the receipt as proof of purchase. On the morning
of your trek, you present your identification at the park headquarters, where
the rangers verify your permit before the briefing. The actual permit card is
usually issued about one week before the trek date, and your operator ensures
you have everything ready for the day.
8. Plan Your
Booking Timeline
Permits sell out quickly, so early booking is
essential. For peak seasons (June–September and December–February), you should
book your permit 3 to 6 months in advance. During low seasons (March–May and
October–November), you can book 1 to 3 months ahead, as demand is lower, but
permits can still sell out. Last-minute bookings are possible but risky,
especially during peak months. Many travelers book permits even a year ahead to
secure their preferred dates and sectors. Early booking also ensures you get
better accommodation options near your trekking sector, as lodges also fill up
quickly during peak times
9. Understand
the Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy
Gorilla permits in Uganda are generally
non-refundable once purchased, but they can be rescheduled under certain
conditions. If you need to change your trekking
date, you must notify your tour operator at least 30 days before the
original trek date, and UWA may allow a reschedule with a small administrative
fee. However, rescheduling is not guaranteed and depends on permit availability
for your new preferred date. If you cancel within 30 days of the trek, you lose
the full $800 fee. It is highly recommended to purchase travel insurance that
covers trip cancellation and medical emergencies, as this can protect you from
losing your permit money due to unforeseen circumstances like illness or flight
cancellations.
10. Work with
Your Tour Operator for a Full Itinerary
Once your permit is secured, your tour operator will
build the rest of your safari around your gorilla trekking date. They will
arrange your airport transfers, accommodation for the nights before and after
your trek, a 4x4 safari vehicle, and an experienced driver-guide. They will
also include other activities like game drives in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison
Falls, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, or boat safaris to make your trip more
varied. The overall package cost depends on your length of stay, accommodation
choice, group size, and season. A 3-day gorilla trekking package typically
starts at about $1,600 to $2,200 per person, including permits, lodging,
transport, and meals.

The best time to book a Uganda gorilla permit
and package is as early as possible, ideally 3 to 6 months before your
planned travel date, especially if you are traveling during the peak dry
seasons of June to September and December to February. Permits are limited to

repellent is necessary to protect against mosquitoes and tsetse flies. Bring a
small daypack to carry water, snacks, and your camera, along with extra

flashlight is handy for early morning starts and evening camp use. Pack a
