Ruhija in Bwindi offers high-altitude gorilla trekking, rich birdlife, peaceful trails, and scenic forested valleys for a rewarding safari

Ruhija Sector is one of the four gorilla trekking sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located on the eastern side of the park in southwestern Uganda. Sitting at an elevation of around 2,300 meters, Ruhija is known for its cool mountain environment, beautiful forested hills and rich biodiversity. It is particularly popular among travelers who want to combine gorilla trekking with bird watching and nature walks. Unlike some of the busier areas of Bwindi, Ruhija has a quieter and more secluded atmosphere. Its high-altitude forest provides an excellent setting for exploring mountain gorillas while enjoying spectacular views across the surrounding valleys and forests.

Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

Gorilla trekking is the main reason most travelers visit Ruhija. The sector is home to habituated gorilla groups that visitors can track through the dense Bwindi forest. The trek involves walking with trained guides and trackers through steep and sometimes challenging terrain in search of a gorilla family. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed one hour of observation with them. The trek can take several hours depending on the location and movement of the gorillas, so travelers should be prepared for a physically demanding forest adventure. Ruhija is especially appealing to travelers who prefer a quieter trekking environment while still having the opportunity to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

What Makes Ruhija Sector Special?

1. A High-Altitude Mountain Environment

Ruhija is one of the highest areas of Bwindi, with the trailhead located at roughly 2,300 meters above sea level. Its elevation creates a cooler climate and a distinctive montane forest landscape. The surrounding hills and valleys also provide beautiful scenery along the journey to the sector.

2. Excellent Bird Watching

Ruhija is one of the best areas in Bwindi for bird watching. Its montane forest supports numerous forest species, including several Albertine Rift specialties. The Mubwindi Swamp trail is particularly popular with birders and provides opportunities to explore the forest while searching for different bird species.

3. Peaceful and Less Crowded

Ruhija offers a more peaceful atmosphere compared with some of Bwindi's more developed tourism areas. This makes it a good choice for travelers who want to enjoy the forest away from large numbers of tourists.

4. Beautiful Forest and Valley Views

The journey through Ruhija takes visitors through rolling highlands, forested ridges and misty valleys. On clear days, some viewpoints offer impressive views toward the surrounding highlands and distant Virunga volcanoes.

Other Activities to Do in Ruhija

Although gorilla trekking is the major attraction, Ruhija offers several other activities that can be added to a safari.

Bird watching: The sector is an excellent destination for bird enthusiasts, particularly around the Mubwindi Swamp area.

Nature walks: Guided forest walks allow visitors to experience Bwindi's vegetation, birds, primates and other forest wildlife.

Mubwindi Swamp trail: This is one of the most popular walking routes in Ruhija and is especially valued for bird watching.

Bamboo trail: The higher sections of the forest can be explored through bamboo-covered areas, offering opportunities to experience the vegetation and wildlife of the mountain environment.

How to Get to Ruhija Sector

Ruhija is most commonly accessed by road from Kabale. From Kampala or Entebbe, travelers generally drive westwards through the main southwestern Uganda route toward Kabale before continuing into the highlands toward Ruhija. The road from Kabale becomes more mountainous and can be rough, so a 4WD safari vehicle is recommended, particularly during the rainy season. Ruhija can also be incorporated into an itinerary connecting different parts of Bwindi, making it possible to combine gorilla trekking with other destinations in southwestern Uganda.

For travelers arriving by air, flights can be arranged to nearby airstrips such as Kihihi, followed by a road transfer to Ruhija.

Best Time to Visit Ruhija

Ruhija can be visited throughout the year, but the drier months of June to September and December to February are generally preferred for gorilla trekking and forest activities. During these periods, trails are usually easier to navigate and conditions are more favorable for trekking.

The wetter months of March to May and October to November bring more rainfall, which can make trails muddy and slippery. However, the forest becomes especially green and lush and bird watching can still be rewarding.

Where to Stay in Ruhija

Travelers have several accommodation options around the sector, ranging from budget camps and guesthouses to comfortable mid-range and luxury lodges. Staying close to the trekking trailhead is convenient because gorilla trekking starts early in the morning.

Popular accommodation options in and around Ruhija include Bakiga Lodge, Gorilla Mist Camp, Broadbill Forest Camp and Ruhija Gorilla Friends Resort, among others.

Why Choose Ruhija for Your Gorilla Safari?

Ruhija is an excellent choice for travelers looking for more than just gorilla trekking. Its combination of mountain gorillas, high-altitude forests, exceptional birdlife, nature walks and peaceful surroundings makes it one of Bwindi's most diverse trekking destinations.

It is particularly suitable for travelers who want to combine a gorilla experience with bird watching and forest exploration. Whether you spend your time searching for gorillas on the forest trails, exploring the Mubwindi Swamp or simply enjoying the scenery of the highlands, Ruhija provides a distinctive way to experience Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
