A 3-day Rwanda
gorilla and golden monkey trek is a compact round-trip from Kigali to
Volcanoes National Park covering two separate primate experiences. Day 1
transfers you about 2.5 hours to Musanze, often with a Kigali city tour or
Genocide Memorial visit en route. Day 2 is mountain gorilla trekking: an early
briefing at park headquarters, then a 1–4 hour forest search before a strictly
limited one hour with a habituated gorilla family at a maximum distance of 5
meters. Day 3 is golden monkey trekking in the bamboo zone, also one hour with
the monkeys, followed by lunch and the drive back to Kigali. Gorilla permits
cost $1,500 and golden monkey permits $100 for foreign non-residents.
Day 1: Kigali to
Volcanoes National Park
You are picked up from your Kigali hotel or the airport, often with a brief city tour or a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then driven about 2.5 hours northwest to Musanze at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. Some itineraries include a stop at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for conservation context before checking into your lodge. The rest of the day is for rest and preparation, with dinner and overnight at your accommodation. The main purpose is simply to position you near the park headquarters for an early start the next morning.
Day 2: Mountain
Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, you go to the park
headquarters for a mandatory briefing around 7:00 AM, where rangers explain
conduct rules and assign you to a habituated gorilla family (maximum eight
visitors per family). You then trek into the forest with guides and trackers;
the search can take 1 to 4 hours (sometimes up to 7) depending on where the
gorillas are and the weather. Once found, you are allowed one hour with the
gorillas, observing them at a maximum distance of 5 meters in Rwanda (compared
to 7 meters in Uganda). After the trek, you return to your lodge; some tours
add a cultural visit to Gorilla Guardians Village or the twin lakes in the
afternoon.
Day 3: Golden
Monkey Trekking and Return to Kigali
After breakfast, you return to the park office for a
separate briefing on golden
monkey trekking. Golden monkeys inhabit the bamboo zone and are generally
found more quickly than gorillas, though the trek still involves hiking through
the forest. You spend one full hour with the monkeys once located. Afterwards,
you have lunch and drive back to Kigali, arriving in the afternoon or early
evening for your flight or hotel drop-off. Note that children under 12 are not
allowed for golden monkey trekking, and under 15 for gorilla trekking.
Permits and
Practical Notes
Rwanda gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person for
foreign non-residents in 2026, and golden monkey permits cost $100 per person;
these are usually included in the tour price but confirm with your operator.
The gorilla permit includes park entry, ranger guides, and the one-hour
observation. Because the golden monkey trek is a separate activity with its own
permit and briefing, a 3-day itinerary is the minimum to fit both primates
without rushing.
